Stevenson Family Show Stables 2011 Wrap-Up

What an amazing year 2011 has been for our show team! We started off the year with two Supremes, three Champions and two Reserves at the Canberra Royal Show, including receiving the inaugural Jill Grant Memorial for Supreme Part Welsh with Bamborough September Song. The first National Pony of the Year Show, held at SIEC, proved to be very successful for our team with four Pony of the Year titles, two Runner Ups and several Championships. This year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show was definitely a memorable one, with Bamborough Country Charm claiming both the Supreme Led Australian Saddle Pony and Champion Ridden Australian Pony Exhibit, and winning the Haydon Perpetual Trophy presented by Robert Grant; a very special moment as Jill always presented this. What an amazing way to seal Charm’s career at her very last show before retirement.

The second half of 2011 has been equally successful, with Song winning all three Small Show Hunter Pony Championships she has competed in at major shows; Macquarie Bank Hack Championships, AHHA Kelato Hunter Nationals and a very emotional SHC NSW HOTY. Song was also successful at both the NSW and Victorian All Welsh Shows; Champion Led and Ridden Part Welsh ne 12.2h and Champion Led/Reserve Ridden Show Hunter ne 13h at NSW, and Supreme Part Welsh Exhibit In-Hand at Victoria in December; a great way to cap off her year! Bamborough Octavia has been doing very well with her saddle career, with success at Agricultural shows in both Open Show Hunter and Ridden Welsh. Octavia reached the semi-finals of the Large Show Hunter Pony at both Macquarie Bank and SHC NSW HOTY, and 1st

Ridden Welsh B Mare/Reserve Champion Welsh B Exhibit to the eventual Supreme winner at NSW All Welsh. Jill did not get to see Octavia under saddle, but we feel she would be very proud of her.

Our own horses have had a great season with Bamborough Memorize stepping up and our two home-bred newcomers Marbuck Just Peepin’ and Marbuck Tuqiri doing very well at limited shows. Out of a strong line-up of ponies, Memorize won the prestigious Supreme Part Welsh In-Hand and the Jill Grant Memorial Trophy at the NSW All Welsh Show; a very special moment when presented by Robert. Memorize also won Supreme Led ASP and Champion Ridden ASP at the APSB Nationals, and Champion Led/Reserve Ridden Part Welsh 12.2-13.2h at Victorian All Welsh. Just Peepin’ followed in her mother B. Peep’n’Seek’s footsteps by placing second in the strong Newcomer Part Welsh at NSW All Welsh (her first show) and Supreme Led APSB-RP Exhibit/Champion Ridden APSB-RP at the APSB Nationals. Tuqiri has had a fabulous season by winning Champion Newcomer Show Hunter Hack (his sixth show) at Macquarie Bank Hack Championships, and qualifying for Canberra Royal. Tuqiri also had a great show at the AHHA Kelato Hunter Nationals; Champion Newcomer/Champion Intermediate Show Hunter Hack and Top 4 National Small Show Hunter Hack. We look forward to Just Peepin’ and Tuqiri’s saddle careers in the future.

Thank you to everyone who helped us out this year and gave us support, as well as all the sponsors and organisers of the shows we attended. A massive thank you to Robert Grant for everything he does for us; it is a great pleasure and honour showing his ponies and keeping them going in Jill’s memory. Many thanks to our sponsors; Champions Choice Browbands, SRC (for our 2011 sponsorship) and McCann’s Chaff Mill Grenfell.

BRIBBAREE AG SHOW

1/10/11

We took a team of four, but ended up going in one class and going home! We had to abandon the show due to the extreme downpour; everything was soaked and it was best to go home before the ground got too muddy and we couldn't get the truck out. Marbuck Tuqiri won his Open Show Hunter Hack 15-16h (his 7th show) and worked very well despite the rainy/muddy conditions! (No photos.)

SHC MACQUARIE BANK HACK CHAMPIONSHIPS GRAND NATIONAL QUALIFIER (EPIC)

16-17-18/9/11

What a show... The slogan for Macquarie Bank "Much More than A Day" was certainly true! For those of you that did not hear about the chaos, the industrial factory (less than a km from the Canberra showgrounds) exploded in the middle of Thursday night causing a massive fire, further explosions and toxic fumes released into the air. At 2 am Friday morning (the first day of the show, Police knocked on our truck telling us to evacuate immediately and to leave everything, including the horses. There was no way we would leave them with toxic fumes in the air and the showground shaking from the explosions sounding like bombs going off! Mum and I quickly threw all our bedding etc into the front of the truck and put the dividers back in in record time, ran our four bewildered horses onto the truck (not even tying them up#, got in the truck with the Tye the dog and took off towards the Canberra Stadium where we were told to go by Police. Luckily I knew my way around Canberra...

Once we got to the Stadium, I put the tailbaord down to climb arcoss the horses, open the windows and take off the top rugs, but 10 mins later we all had to disperse again in a convoy heading for Dickson College (in the city). On our way there, we all instructed to turn off our engines, put the windows up and stay inside. But the windows were open in the back! So I (quickly) put the tailboard down again and closed the windows. That part was scary not knowing what was going to happen; were we going to be engulfed by toxic fumes? Luckily another 10 mins later, the wind changed again and we were allowed to proceed to Dickson College. Once there, we open the windows again and we found most people and their horses had made their way there safely, and also that lots of people headed straight to Queanbeyan Showgrounds from Canberra showground. We were at Dickson until 6:30 am (provided with tea/coffee from the emergency services), and I had a little interview on Channel 10 news (looking dishevelled!). The Benton Family from Murrumbateman (25 mins out of Canberra) were generous in letting us stay at their house for the day, with the ponies enjoying the paddock after 5 hours standing on the truck. Later in the day at around 3pm, we returned to the showground after the all clear.

Thank you to the ACT and Southern Highlands Show Horse committee for a fantastic show, run with professionalism and friendliness especially during the horrific and unexpected circumstances. Also thank you for slotting in the Newcomer Hunter classes on Saturday (that were meant to be on Friday). Thank you to the lovely Benton Family for their genorosity. A SHOW NEVER TO FORGET!!! Afer all that, we did end up having a fabulous show. I am so proud of our ponies being so well behaved during the ordeal; they were tired during the show but they tried their hardest and did so well.

Anyone who visited our house at either Moss Vale or Young would know who she is; she was such a sweetheart... Will miss Millie very very much as she was very much part of the family and I grew up with her... ♥ you Millie, Rest In Peace with Bella and Jake xoxo

SYDNEY ROYAL EASTER SHOW

(HOMEBUSH)

21-27/04/11

What an memorable show! Charm was working and looking her best to be awarded both Supreme Champion Led Australian Saddle Pony and Champion Ridden Australian Saddle Pony! Joining Beaufort Heiress, Charm is the only exhibit to have won both of these awards in the same year. It was also fantastic to be awarded the Haydon Memorial Trophy which is donated by Jill Grant; this year presented by Robert... What an extreme honour to have won this very special award. Such an emotional day; not a dry eye in the house (even had the stewards all emotional). Charm did very well across all her sections. Song and Octavia also had a great show, which was mostly in a muddy arena! A massive thank you to Melissa Corbett and Rachel Molloy for their help on Saturday and Wednesday, to Robert Grant for his support during the show, and to my Dad Alex for getting us there safely and home again. But the biggest thanks goes to my Mum Christinne who did an amazing job all show; where would we be without her?!

SHC GRAND NATIONALS

(SIEC)

17/04/11

We arrived in the pouring rain on Saturday, but eventually the sun came out on Sunday for a beautiful day! Bamborough September Song worked well in the indoor amongst a very strong class of thirty ponies. Despite not making the Top 10, we were pleased with her performance, especially her gallop!

NATIONAL PONY OF THE YEAR SHOW (NPOTY)

(SIEC)

8-10/04/11

We had a fantastic show at the inaugural National Pony Of The Year Show; a very well run event! We ended up with four kersey rugs and four garlands and a stash of titles. All ponies worked well during the weekend, especially Song who took out two Ridden POTY titles! Many thanks to Mark Brown who led Memorize for Runner Up Part Welsh Gelding Of The Year, and The Rug Rack for the beautiful kersey rugs we won.

What an absolutley amazing show! Song's results were outstanding throughout the whole show, picking up two Supreme Champions and also (very emotionaly) the inaugural Jill Grant Memorial Award for Supreme Part Welsh In-Hand Exhibit (not a dry eye in the house). Charm had a great show winning the extremely competitive Champion Ridden Part Welsh Exhibit, whilst Memorize won two Reserve Championships. Octavia and Illusion also placed highly in their classes. Something else special that happened was that Song, Mem and Charm all won their Ridden Part Welsh classes (ne 13h, 13-14h, over 14h) one after the other! THANK YOU to the following people who helped SFSS at some stage during Canberra Royal; Mum and Dad, Amie Harrison, Di Phillips, Terry Hocking, Christie Hall, Jacob Wells, Jamie Priestley, Melissa Corbett, Luke Stuart-Smith, Karen Creer, Medhurst Family and Penny Gibson!

SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS AND TABLELANDS APSB FEATURE SHOW(MOSS VALE)

The sun was shining for our first show for the year; until about 2pm when it bucketed down rain! The show had to be stopped for about 20 minutes and we were about to leave when the sun popped its head out again! We had a successful day with our team of four ponies. Bamborough Memorize is one to watch this year, after taking out Champion Ridden Open Pony out of a strong line up of ponies including a Grand National winner! Thanks to Kelsey Sibley for all her help, and congratulations for a successful day!
