Bamborough Stud is owned by Jill and Robert Grant and located in Cowra, NSW. The stud was founded in 1969, producing Welsh Mountain, Welsh, Part-Welsh, Australian, Riding Pony and Australian Saddle Ponies. The emphasis is being able to produce Royal Show quality ponies with movement and cool, placid temperaments.

The stud began with the beautiful galloway mare, Bambalina, who was a Thoroughbred/Welsh cross. She won 23 first prizes at Sydney Royal (a record) in 6 years, and was Champion Saddle Galloway for 4 years. Bambalina left a great legacy in the stud through her three daughters, which were the foundation of the Riding Pony, Part-Welsh and Saddle Pony sections. Many descendents of this great mare are successfully shown in Bamborough’s show teams.

The Australian section began with the mare Lochinch Comobella, by the great saddle pony sire Croppa Dandy. She proved an invaluable broodmare with a legacy of descendents winning at Royal level today. Then came Barolin Charity (by Barolin Feluka, out of Barolin Carmen), who also produced some wonderful ponies.

In 1993, Jill and Robert’s interest in Welsh ponies intensified during a visit to the UK. While at the Royal Show, a colt foal was noticed on the winning mare Boston Bodecia, and Boston Bittermint (imp) (by Vardell Right Royal) was duly purchased. Bittermint has proven himself many times with his progeny, being the sire of extremely successful ridden Ponies and Galloways. Perhaps his best daughter (and most well-known) is Bamborough Mannequin, who has won all across the country up to Royal level, including Runner-up Large Pony at the Grand National in 2004 and 2006.

It was time now to find another stallion to cross on the Bittermint daughters. The colt Eyarth Tigra (imp) was found at the Eyarth Stud in Wales, and he arrived in Australia in 2001. Tigra is by the Royal Welsh Champion, Carwed Charmer, out of the beautiful mare, Eyarth Arabella. Tigra has already proven himself as a sire of successful colts and fillies, producing the full brothers Paramount, Academy and Oscar and the Best Exhibit at the NSW All Welsh Show from his second drop of foals.

Jill and Robert have formed some successful partnerships over the years, notably the Firth Family (Orange, NSW) and the Stevenson Family (Young, NSW). Di and Brooke Firth showed some of the most successful ponies in the country;

At the 2010 Grand Nationals, Bamborough Pony Stud will be proudly represented by a contingent of four ponies; B. September Song (Small Show Hunter Pony), B. Etchings, B. Pristine and B. Montague (Large Show Hunter Pony). Currently, B. Candace, B. September Song and B. Special Girl are the only Bamborough ponies to have won an Open Champion at Royal/National level; what makes them even more special is the fact that they are all pure Australian ponies.

Bamborough Pony Stud will hold its Bi-Annual Pony Sale in November this year. The sale has been on-going for many years now, and combines with Imperial and Amaranda Pony Studs to bring a selection of quality Welsh, Welsh B, Part Welsh, Australian, Part APSB, APSB/RP, Riding Ponies and Saddle Ponies to the public for sale. Stallions include Boston Bittermint (IMP), Eyarth Tigra (IMP), Bamborough Royal Request and Imperial Juggler.

Jill and Robert would like to thank anyone who has had any involvement with Bamborough ponies over the years, including riders, handlers, workers, beside-the-ring-holders, and those that have admired from afar!

2010 Sale Reflection

For most part, 2010 was filled with intensive preparation for the Bamborough-Imperial-Amaranda Pony Sale that was held on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st of November. In

previous years, the sale has been Jill’s baby, but her daughter Kylie has stepped in and assisted Robert in the sale process. It has been a tough road for Robert and family, both with the loss of our dear Jill (one of the most inspirational, influential and indeed beautiful horsewomen in Australia) and also one of the most successful Welsh Pony stallions in the country Eyarth Tigra (IMP) (winner of numerous Sires’ ratings and producing extremely successful progeny).

The beginning of the sale week proved to be very wet and muddy, almost impossible to prep sale ponies! But as the days progressed, the sun peeked out a little more each day, and by sale weekend, the weather couldn’t be more perfect. (Organised by Jill I’m sure!) This year’s Reduction Sale turned out to be the most successful; BPS sold all ponies bar one (B. Jordana who was passed in) and Imperial Pony Stud enjoyed the top price of the sale. Amaranda Pony Stud also had a successful day on Saturday. Both days had a great atmosphere which was helped by the fabulous auctioneering of John Clothier (Beaudesert, QLD).

Saturday began with Youngstock, which proved to be very popular, with buyers from every state in Australia and even New Zealand and the United Kingdom ready to purchase. BPS’s three top selling Youngstock were; B. Lady Joanne a chestnut roan Welsh filly (Eyarth Tigra (IMP) X B. Lady Jacalyn) purchased by Hayley Malseed from Tyrendarra (VIC), B. Cymbeline a grey Welsh filly (Boston Bittermint (IMP) X B. Capulet) purchased by Lee Woods-Traynor from Moree (NSW) and B. Country Belle (Boston Bittermint (IMP) X Willowcroft Country Colours, who is full sister to the very successful B. Country Charm) purchased by the Morrow Family from Peranga (QLD). Congratulations; we wish you every success with these gorgeous Youngstock.

Sunday proceeded with Broodmares, with the majority of the crowd from Saturday staying on to view some top ponies. BPS’s top selling Broodmare was B. Razzara, a gorgeous chestnut Welsh B mare (Eyarth Tigra (IMP) X Downland Razzamatazz (IMP)) with a typey chestnut colt at foot by Boston Bittermint (IMP); again another fantastic purchase by Hayley Malseed. Hayley also purchased another top seller from BPS in I. Lady Gracious, a chestnut Riding Pony mare (Downland Warrior (IMP) X I. Lady Grace) with a lovely chestnut filly at foot by B. Royal Request. Jacqui Langfield from Cowra (NSW) acquired a fantastic chestnut Riding Pony mare in Kirreway Bon Bon (Syon Splendor (IMP) X Downland Delft (IMP)). The mare was almost overshadowed by her exquisite chestnut filly foal (by B. Royal Request); defiantly something to watch in the future. Despite being seventeen years of age, chestnut APSB mare B. Reflections (Chamberlayne Don Juan (IMP) X Belbowrie Silver Image), a grand daughter of the great Lowlynn Silver Chief, was another popular top seller for BPS. This lovely mare’s typey chestnut colt at foot was the only BPS foal in the sale by I. Juggler, and was purchased by LE and P Webb from Tooraweenah (NSW). Congratulations to all Broodmare buyers.

BPS would like to thank all staff members, helpers, buyers, family and friends, saddlerys who displayed posters, Emma’s Show Horses and Show Ring Classifieds websites for displaying the catalogue, and the WP&CS, APSB, RPSB, ASPA and Horse Scene for displaying Promotional material. Last but not least, thank you to Mark Brown who ran around the sale ring for two days in shavings in the heat; amazing job!

(Eyarth Tigra IMP DEC... RIP)

Its is with sadness that BPS announce the passing of our great stallion, Eyarth Tigra (IMP), in June this year. Tiggy (Carwed Charmer X Eyarth Arabella) arrived in Australia in 2001, and got to work at BPS straight away! Anyone will agree that he has produced some of the most typey and successful Welsh Ponies in the country. Perhaps his best and most well known son is B. Paramount, who has won countless awards across the country. B. Academy, B. Oscar and B. Othello are also very well performed and valuable Tigra sons. His presence will definately be missed, but we look forward to his last drop of foals in 2010. RIP Tiggy.
