September Song

(Song) Owned by Bamborough Pony Stud, shown by Stevenson Family.

12.2h, black/brown APSB mare (also reg. PW, ASP, RP). By Fairlight Acres Kidman, out of Bamborough Sierra (Grand National Runner-Up).

2012 Sydney Royal was Song's very last show... She is not just a pony to us; during the past four years since Jill and Robbo asked us to show her for them, she has touched our lives in such a dramatic way, we love her with all our hearts. She has had an unbelievable career, beyond our wildest dreams... But it is time for her to have beautiful babies... As devastated as we are that she is retiring, we will never forget our Song; a true show pony with a huge personality that melted our hearts.

Some of her career highlights include:

  • Supreme Part Welsh at NSW/QLD/VIC All Welsh shows (2006, 2007, 2011)
  • Champion Ridden Part Welsh/Champion Led Show Hunter/Champion Ridden Show Hunter at NSW/VIC All Welsh Shows (2010, 2011)
  • WP&CS Achiever Award winner (2011)
  • Supreme Part Welsh/Supreme Australian Pony/Supreme ASP Exhibit/Champion Small Hunter Pony at Canberra Royal (2010, 2011)
  • Supreme ASP Exhibit and winner Ridden ASP/Australian Pony at Sydney Royal (2010, 2011, 2012)
  • Twice Supreme Ridden Australian Pony/Supreme Ridden Part Welsh/RU Supreme Ridden RP Hunter/RU Supreme Led Australian Pony/RU Most Successful Exhibit/winner Working Hunter pony at NPOTY show (2011, 2012)
  • Top 10 Grand National Small Hunter Pony (2010)
  • Champ Small Hunter Pony and Champ Led Pony at SHC NSW HOTY show (2008, 2011)
  • Twice Champ and once RU Small Hunter Pony at Macquarie Bank Hack Champs (2009, 2010, 2011)
  • Champ Small Hunter Pony at AHHA Nationals (2011)
  • Supreme Ridden Exhibit/Supreme Australian Pony Mare at APSB Nationals (2008, 2009)
  • Countless Champs/Supremes at Ag shows in Led and Ridden Open Hunter/ASP/PW/Australian/RP Hunter/WH classes (2008-2012)
  • Song's achievements largely contributed to Brooke winning the 2011 Young Sports Council Senior Sportsperson of the Year

Song's stand out would have to be Supreme ASP Exhibit at Sydney Royal 2010, as it was the last show that Jill watched Song (or any of her ponies) compete at. It was a very special moment receiving the award with Jill and Robbo watching from the stands with delight. Wearing Jill's pink flower, it has been a great honour to show, take care of and love Song, and with great pleasure we can say she has more than equalled her mother Bamborough Sierra's footsteps. Thank you to everyone for their support over the years, especially Robbo. Can safely say that Song has a huge fan base! Love you little Song........ :'-(((( xxoo

Sire: Belvoir Zechin (IMP)

Dam: Tip Top Merrilegs

Grandsire of Dam: Lowlynn Silver Chief

Bred by: G & M Burling, Marnic Pony Stud, Baulkham Hills, NSW

Marnic Merrymaid, affectionately known as “Mardi”, was purchased by Alex and Christinne on 10th of March, 1983 from Marnic Pony Stud. From the very first moment as a yearling, Mardi (with her big soft eyes) walked straight onto a strange float with ease, showing just how easy going, patient, tolerant and honest she would be for the rest of her life.

Mardi was shown led by Christinne as a filly, unbeaten at every agricultural show and winning at the APSB Nationals. Her beautiful nature shone threw when Mardi was broken in effortlessly at three years of age by Christinne, and began pursuing a very successful saddle career.

Some highlights include;

  • Winner of APSB South-Coast Hi-Point Led AND Ridden All Breeds, which was accumulated over seven shows
  • Wins at the APSB Nationals (including Reserve Champion All Breeds ridden by a child, ridden by Christinne’s son Adam)
  • South Coast APSB Show Grand Champion of Champions
  • Sydney Royal Easter Show: 2nd Novice, 2nd Open, 4th Ridden ASP
  • Canberra Royal Show: 1st Novice, 3rd Open,
  • Champion under saddle twice at Bathurst APSB Show
  • Champions under saddle at many major Sydney shows, including Castle Hill
  • Numerous Champions and Supremes at various agricultural shows in Open, APSB and ASP classes

Mardi had proved herself as a well performed pony, but her greatest test was as a child’s pony. It was as though Mardi was born to carry a child through many disciplines safely and without fuss. Brooke began riding on a Shetland named “Big Poke”, but progressed onto Mardi at the start of 1992. At 6 years of age, the 1992 Sydney Royal was Brooke’s first major show, winning the Girl Rider 6 and under 9 years riding Mardi, whom Christinne and Alex had no doubt would give their daughter a safe ride on the open arena at Moore Park.

This was the start of a successful career for Mardi and Brooke, not only in the show ring but across all disciplines. Some show highlights include:

  • Sydney Royal Easter Show: 1st Girl Rider 6-9yrs ’92, 2nd Girl Rider 6-9yrs ’93 and ’94, 3rd Girl Rider 9-12yrs ’95, Winner of Pair of Ponies, Pair of Riders and Team of Riders numerous times (virtually unbeaten).
  • Canberra Royal Show: 1st Girl Rider 7-10yrs and Reserve Champion Girl Rider under 13yrs 1995, numerous wins in Pony Club Girl Rider, Pair of Ponies, Pair of Riders and Pleasure Pony Hack.
  • Numerous Champions and Supremes in Girl Rider classes at various Agricultural shows across NSW.

Mardi and Brooke also Won the Australian Pony Section in the APSB Challenge at the ASPB Nationals, and achieved 2nd Overall. Mardi was always a pleasure to ride, thus attaining 2nd Overall in the Grand Final of the Ultimate Pleasure Horse Challenge 1996, held at Cootamundra, against adults and hacks.

Showing her versatility and reliability, Mardi carried Brooke safely through many years of Pony Club, with wins at numerous Dressage, Showjumping and One Day Event competitions, and Zone Jamborees. Mardi was an excellent jumper for her size, and took Brooke to Area level, representing Area 1 in Showjumping. She was also a very fun pony, going in any event, such as Keyhole races and the Bonfield Bounce, where her love of food would often take over and she would stop and consume the hay bales.

Mardi’s reliability and safety was often admired by many mothers who would ask to borrow her for their child’s riding class. Mardi took children, such as Jaci Mascord and Ellisha Ebbeck, to wins and places at Royal Shows. Brooke and Mardi would also compete in the Fancy Dress every year at Sydney Royal, with such outfits as Dame Edna, Barbie and Ken, and Priscilla Queen of the Desert, always coming home with a placing.

Always being healthy and fit, it came as a shock to Alex and Christinne when Mardi was struck down in 1988 with a critical bout of Salmonella, and she was rushed to Camden University Vet Clinic. A fantastic team nursed her through that painful fortnight, and much to everybody’s surprise, Mardi came through, despite been given a 10% chance of living.

Mardi gave birth to her only foal, a filly, at the end of 1990, named “Marbuck Annika” (by “Oaklee Park Chief”), whom went on to win led and ridden at Sydney Royal and Champion ridden at APSB Nationals.

Mardi retired from showing in 1997 at the age of 16yrs, but thrived on giving small children lessons and teaching them to ride, just as she did with Brooke. She lived out the rest of her beautiful life close to Alex, Christinne and Brooke at the farm at Young, happily fulfilling her huge appetite, which never seemed to diminish over the years. She was sadly put down on 20th of March, 2008, at 26 years of age, after succumbing to Cushing’s Disease. She rests peacefully in her special place within our garden, amongst the wattle trees.

Mardi was a not only a beautiful, kind pony who had success in the show ring, but also a true friend who gave every effort she had. She was one-of-a-kind, never to be replaced. Anybody who came across her knew how fantastic she was and how much we loved her, just as we always will. The Marnic Merrymaid Memorial Award and Perpetual Trophy was awarded for the first time at the 2009 Morongla All Breeds Foal and Youngstock show, in remembrance of our beautiful pony.

Mardi, may you rest in peace, just as you deserve.

-Brooke Stevenson.
